Carbonized Wood Fossil

This is carbonized organic matter (wood) in gray shale.
It is found in all sizes and shapes. The fossil itself is
compressed and very thin, 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch thick.

The picture below is a 150X magnification.
Note the rows of small, square carbon ( coal ) crystals.
